|Never the Sinner|
by John Logan
Directed by Peter Reynolds In the Spring of 1924, two young Chicago millionaires set out to commit the perfect murder. Driven by passion and fevered intellect, handsome Richard Loeb and his lover, Nathan Leopold Jr. brutally killed fourteen-year-old Bobby Franks, for the thrill of it. Known in its time as the crime of the century, the sensational Leopold and Loeb trial ignited a media frenzy, as legendary defense attorney Clarence Darrow fought to save the boys from execution and news of the merciless crime both horrified and captivated the nation. Mauckingbird Theatre Company’s production of John Logan’s remarkable crime drama, Never the Sinner: The Leopold and Loeb Story explores this dark, riveting tale of morality, love and murder in an intimate performance.
The cast is led by Evan Jonigkeit (The Misanthrope, Shakespeare’s R&J) as Richard Loeb and Nicholas Park (Shakespeare’s R&J) as Nathan Leopold, Jr., with veteran actors Dan Kern as Clarence Darrow and Eric Kramer as state’s attorney Robert Crowe.
